(Mini) Game Review: OTXO

Top-down, bloody violence shooty action next. From developer Lateralis Heavy Industries and publisher Super Rare Originals comes OTXO (pronounced oh-cho).

“Enter an inexplicable, abstract mansion to rescue a loved one in this fast-paced, brutal, and dark roguelite filled with precise but savage gunplay and time-bending slow motion. Face your inner demons and unveil the secrets of the Mansion.”

OTXO SCREEN 1

There are two things that I want to get out of the way right from the off. Firstly, the similarities between this and Hotline Miami are unavoidable. Secondly, OTXO is insanely fun to play. The game begins with you on a train and a stranger drops a mask. So of course, you put it on. Then, you wake up outside a mysterious mansion and you set about killing anyone that moves.

OTXO’s gameplay is as simple and as engrossing as its visuals. Unlike the very colourful and vibrant Hotline Miami, the world of OTXO is darker and monochrome. Then there’s the rogue-like gameplay. Kill enemies, earn coins and spend coins on booze… which are your buffs and upgrades. The more enemies you kill in quick succession, the more your multiplier builds. The higher your multiplier, the more coins you earn. OTXO is all about fast-paced action and the game keeps pushing you to move forwards.

OTXO SCREEN 3

You go through ammo faster than Tony Montana goes through cocaine. Enemies drop their guns when killed and 99% of the time, you’re better off grabbing a gun from one of your downed foes than reloading. This all adds to the frantic nature of the game and encourages you to keep moving. There is a focus meter, basically slow-motion, that you can use when things get really hectic.

OTXO SCREEN 2

OTXO comes with a wide variety of weapons and upgrades, non-stop shooting action and boss fights that will test your skills. Priced at around £12 and available right now on SteamOTXO is well worth checking out. There is a narrative here too, as you slowly learn just what this mansion is all about and why so many people are hellbent on trying to end your life.
