We are back with another Daddy/Daughter game review, as I try to nurture my 6-year-old daughter’s recent interest in gaming. Developer Petit Fabrik and publisher GameMill Entertainment offer up a slice of cute platforming action with Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue.
“Play as Poppy, Branch and more of your favorite DreamWorks Trolls as you explore, smash, dance and battle your way towards rescuing the Troll Kingdom from a melodic mastermind who’s trying to alter the Trolls’ musical harmony!”
Getting right to the point, Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue is very typical platforming fare. I’m pretty sure that you can tell exactly what the game will be like just by watching the trailer alone. This is not necessarily a bad thing at all, it is more a case that there are no real surprises here.

The basic plot here involves the Troll Kingdom being put under a magic spell by Chazz and his smooth-jazz clarinet. You then have to create your own troll (from a load of customisation options) and set out to put a stop to Chazz and save Toll Kingdom… and I have no idea what I just wrote. Neither my daughter nor me are not exactly well-versed on the Toll lore.
Story aside, Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue is a very bright and colourful title. Taking place in a 3D environment, all the standard 3D platforming traits are here on full display. You start out with the basic jump and soon learn an attack. As you progress through the game, more skills open up and your custom-made troll soon becomes quite the formidable hero.

Outside of all of the bog-standard platforming shenanigans, Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue throws in some mini-games. These tend to be music/rhythm-based things with a little QTE action added to the mix. Quite honestly, these do make a nice break from the main action, but if I am being honest. They do tend to go on a bit too long.
The camera can and will cause a few problems as a lot of the time, it seems to have a mind of its own. Zooming right up to the characters and making it pretty difficult to judge jumps and such. The camera issues are even worse if you play in co-op mode as the camera really seems to struggle keeping up with two playable characters on screen.

Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue is priced at around £40 and is currently available for PC and all of the consoles. My daughter and I had a good time with this one. It doesn’t bring anything new to the table and if you have ever played a 3D platformer before, then you know exactly what you are getting here. My 6-year-old did struggle with the rhythm-based mini-game and she really didn’t like those parts, but she got a real kick out of the platforming and exploring the levels together.

The camera issues can be annoying and I also spotted some clipping problems with the graphics too. But overall, this was a nice game for father and daughter to play and I think it certainly hits the right cords with a younger audience. I’m not entirely convinced by the £40 price tag and it does seem a wee bit high to me. Still, if you are looking for a fun game to play with the kids, this could be just the ticket.
