On the 10th of December 2023, the seminal FPS game that is Doom turned 30 years old. It was a milestone well worth celebrating. I did my bit by scribing a book that covered Doom’s 30-year legacy… available to buy from Amazon. In October of 2023, I took myself along to PLAY Expo in Blackpool here in the UK. Rather amazingly, I got to meet the Icon of Sin himself, Mr John Romero and he even signed a pre-release version of my book.

But that’s not what this article is about, I already covered my time at PLAY Expo here. No, this article is about the finest Doom fan-made film made. You see, while I was at PLAY Expo last year, I also had the great pleasure of meeting Bill Thorpe. Now, Bill’s is a name that won’t jump out at you, but hopefully, after this article, it’ll be a name that you won’t forget.

Anyway, I wanted to meet Bill at PLAY Expo because he’s the talent behind an amazingly awesome Doom fan-made film. Bill also (very generously) contributed to my previously mentioned Doom book (buy a copy). I had seen his Doom film a while back, and I heard that he would be doing a special screening of said film at PLAY Expo and I really wanted to watch it again, this time with an audience. Long story short, it was a pretty wonderful experience as people clapped and cheered while Bill’s film played.

ME AND BILL

For Doom’s 30th anniversary, Bill Thorpe uploaded the full version of his Doom film to his YouTube channel. If you are a Doom fan, you really do need to give this film a gander. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m very proud to offer, for your viewing pleasure, Doom… made from cardboard.

What one creative man can do with some cardboard, glue and a camera is better than what a multi-million dollar Hollywood production could manage.
