Don’t tell anyone, but I’ve never really been a fan of the RPG genre. A few titles aside, I just find that RPGs don’t hold my interest all that much. So, I’m the perfect person to review Beyond Galaxyland, a sci-fi RPG from developer Sam Enright and publisher United Label.

“Take to the stars in retro-futuristic adventure-RPG, Beyond Galaxyland! Spanning the very cosmos, join Doug and his plucky, gun-toting guinea pig, Boom Boom, on an exhilarating, planet-hopping journey to save Earth itself.”

A gun-toting guinea pig, eh? Okay, I’m in. Before I get started, I had better explain why this is an unfinished review. I was sent a Steam key for the game, I redeemed it and played a couple of hours – then my laptop decided to die on me. I am not able to get a new laptop for a few weeks, which makes playing and reviewing PC game a tad difficult. So with my being laptopless for a while, this will have to be an unfinished review which I will (hopefully) finish further down the line. How am I writing this (unfinished) review with no laptop? You may ask. With great difficulty and on my phone.

Right then, Beyond Galaxyland is a turn-based RPG that (I think) is inspired by the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek and all that. You play as Doug (the main character anyway) who, along with his gun-toting guinea pig called Boom Boom, leave Earth and get to explore the galaxy… and it was not too long after this bit where my laptop decided to depart. So I’m not able to really get into what goes on here. I played just under two hours. I got into a few turn-based fights, had several conversations with several NPCs, did a tiny bit of exploring and such, and that’s about all I got to see and do.

I can tell you that Beyond Galaxyland has a wonderful 2.5D pixel art style that is impressive. The way the camera pans and zooms around the environments really gives the game a lot of scope and depth. I just wish that I had got to play more because Beyond Galaxyland looks really damn good. I may not be the world’s biggest RPG fan, but I can appreciate great game design, nevertheless. For what little I did play, I enjoyed it and I can see bigger RPG fans really getting a lot out of this one. With a price tag o around £14 and out now for everything, Beyond Galaxyland could be a title worth adding to your backlog.
