Nope, there hasn’t been a sequel confirmed or announced, but it is inevitable and a terrible idea too. As I write this, A Minecraft Movie is doing very well at the box office and has taken over $720 million. Many people are suggesting it could top the $1 billion mark before it ends it’s cinema run. I have my doubts, it could break the $1 billion, but I’m not convinced.

We, as a family, went to watch A Minecraft Movie over Easter and I can quite honestly say it was one of the worst films I have seen for a while. The kids seemed to like a few bits of it here and there, but as an overall film, it was pretty awful. It’s like we have regressed to the mid to late 90s when videogame film adaptions were just churned out with little thought and effort, but threw in random references because that’s what fans want. You remember the likes of Double Dragon, Street Fighter and Wing Commander, right? It’s like all the great work of Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been swept under the carpet.

I was so disappointed by A Minecraft Movie that I couldn’t even be bothered to “hate review” it for this site, because I felt it was a waste of my time. I did want to write something about it, hence this article. But, my brief view of the film. Unfunny, terrible overacting, instantly forgettable characters, 3 minute plot dragged out for an hour and 40 minutes, and I felt I had been sitting there for three hours. The biggest sin is that Minecraft is a world where anything is possible, you’re just limited by your own imagination. Ironically, the writers of the film had zero imagination and the end result was a boring and unfunny flick.

Anyway, to the point of this article. There’s going is be a sequel, despite the film being awful, because it has taken a ton of money. Studios don’t care about the quality of a film, they just look at the numbers. With A Minecraft Movie taking over $720 million, I can guarantee that the bigwigs are already doing the sequel-talk thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if the sequel is officially announced before the end of summer. Anyway, A Minecraft Movie has not taken that money because it’s a good film, it has taken it largely thanks to a crappy TikTok trend of screaming at the screen and throwing popcorn everywhere when the Steve character says “chicken jockey”. Some idiot even brought a live chicken into a screening.

This is why the film has taken so much money, idiots are paying just to take part in a crappy TikTok thing, not to watch the film. You may find this hard to swallow, but in 1999 people paid for a cinema ticket just to see the Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace trailer… and then left without watching the film that they paid to see, which increased the box office for a film they had no intention of watching. Generally speaking, people are stupid. I’m pretty convinced that a big chunk of A Minecraft Movie making so much money is down to the TikTok trend. Even if some of these people had no intention to scream at the screen and throw popcorn, they were there to witness it, because TikTok. This is also why I’m not convinced it’ll take $1 billion, because the trend is now dying out. When we went to watch the film, the screening was mostly empty, nobody screamed at the screen, nobody threw popcorn. The bubble on the chicken jockey trend has burst and very few people are now going to see the film.

Of course, the studio heads don’t care about any of that. A Minecraft Movie has made $720 million, so a sequel will happen. The film even sequel-baits in a post credits scene. Nope, I didn’t wait around in the cinema to watch it, I was so utterly bored after the film (at one point I began counting the lights in the cinema’s celling) that I wanted to get out ASAFP. But the post credit scene is being covered by various websites and yeah, it leaves it open for a sequel.

Unless there’s an other annoying TikTok trend for the A Minecraft Movie sequel, it’s not going do well. The short attention span of those who did take part in the chicken jockey TikTok trend would’ve moved onto something else by the time the sequel is released. There’s a reason that Sonic the Hedgehog has had two sequels and why The Super Mario Bros. Movie has a sequel coming next year. Not only did they do well at the box office, they didn’t need a crappy TikTok trend to get people into the cinema. They took the money they did because the films were watchable and very enjoyable. A Minecraft Movie is an awful film and it’s success has little to do with the quality of the movie itself. So yeah, get ready for a sequel…
