Deep Deep Deep Nightmare comes from developer Nato Games and publisher QUByte Interactive. Sometimes, I just wanna play something quick, simple and fun. But does Deep Deep Deep Nightmare scratch that itch?
“Deep Deep Deep Nightmare is a 2D Top Down Shooter. Survive by facing monsters in the nightmare of a little boy who didn’t heed his mother’s warnings that eating too much before bed can cause nightmares.”
Deep Deep Deep Nightmare is as simple as simple can be. The story is as about as deep as detailed in the blurb up there. You play as a boy who eats cake late and night, and end up having nightmares. Then you are thrown into this top-down, twin-stick shooter to do battle with hundreds and hundreds of nightmarish enemies. It’s basic, it’s uncomplicated and Deep Deep Deep Nightmare doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel.

If you have ever played a twin-stick sooter before, then everything here will feel familiar. The controls are as you’d expect, one stick moves you, the other aims. You have a shoot button and a dodge/roll button… and that’s about it. You can buy and use spells that work as upgrades and offer a variety of defensive and offensive aid. You kill monsters in rounds. Finish all the rounds to face a boss. Take the boss out and earn some in-game currency. Between nightmarish battles, you can use that currency in the shop to buy new weapons, spells and hats. Rinse and repeat.

Deep Deep Deep Nightmare isn’t a game that will change the landscape of the gaming world… and I like that. It’s just good, simple, shooting fun. The controls are responsive and (thanks to the ability to rebind buttons) very user friendly. It has a nice budget price too and you can pick the game up for under £9. The purchasable weapons and such does add a bit of progression as you try to save up for the best weapons and spells. The gameplay is fast and offers a pretty fair difficulty curve too.

If you’re looking for a shooter that doesn’t try to complicate matters, then Deep Deep Deep Nightmare could be just what you need. It’s fun, I enjoyed it and there are far worse things to spend you (less than) £9 on.
