I always like to start a review for a game genre that I’m not fond of with a confession. So here it goes, I don’t much like walking sims, you know those titles where you do a lot of walking, and not much gaming? They’re usually more character and story driven (slightly) interactive tales over games. So anyway, developer and publisher Unreliable Narrators offers up Two Falls: Nishu Takuashina for me to review.

“Explore 17th century Canadian wilderness through the eyes of Jeanne, a French woman who crossed the Atlantic to start anew and Maikan, an Innu hunter trying to discover what’s disturbing the forest. Your choices will shape the traits of the protagonists in this narrative single-player experience.”

Two Falls: Nishu Takuashina has already seen a release on PC a while back, but it has recently made it way to consoles. As the blurb up there said, you play as two characters. There’s Jeanne, a French women whose ship crashes and leaves her alone (except for a dog) in the Canadian wilderness. Then there’s the Innu hunter, Maikan who believes that there is some evil force lurking in the woods. The game switches between both characters as you progress and their two lives become intertwined over a mysterious while wolf fleece.

Enough with the story set up, how about the gameplay? It is typical walking sim fare. You traverse along a linear path and sometimes press the button to pick something up. There’s plenty of conversations to be had and choices to be made that supposedly change the outcome of he game’s narrative. But, this is my main issue with this genre of game, there’s really not much of a game. The story is quite interesting and the characters are well developed and all… but you can just watch a playthrough on YouTube and get the same experience. There’s really very little for me to cover here. It’s a walking sim, it looks nice, you walk and sometimes press a button to do something.

I’m not saying that Two Falls: Nishu Takuashina is a bad game, it’s just not my kind of game… because it’s hardly a game at all. If you’re a walking sim fan, you’ll definitely get much more out of this than I did. As I said, the story is interesting and the characters are great… there’s just no gameplay to get me teeth into. It’s not a particularly long title (3.5 hours), but there is some replayability due to the choices that you make. I can see someone much more into the genre getting a lot out of this one than I did. I may not be a fan of the genre, but I can still appreciate a well made title. Yeah, Two Falls: Nishu Takuashina is well made and at a price that won’t destroy your bank balance.
