It’s a good job that I like the Metroidvania sub-genre, because there’s a lot of them out there. Developer Brainium Games and publisher Deadpix Studios have a new Metroidvania game out called Undivine. So I’d better take a quick look at it.

“A dark metroidvania with RPG elements, “Undivine” challenges you to explore, battle, and uncover secrets in a desolate, interconnected world. Customize your abilities, wield unique weapons, and delve into deep lore filled with mystery.”

Undivine is basic. No, not basic, minimalistic. You can kind of tell that from the trailer and screenshots. I adore the graphics here. In fact, I put my review request in just because I watched the trailer. The fact that it is a Metroidvania was an added bonus. A simple pixel, 2D look with great animation and little details. I don’t have to go into how a Metroidvania plays, do I?

Undivine doesn’t do anything new or ground-breaking, and that’s a good thing. You start was nothing more than the ability to jump and attack with a sword. But, as you explore the map, you’ll find bosses. Defeat the boss and earn a new skill. Use that skill to progress further into the game. It is avery basic Metroidvania, and that is a major part of Undivine’s draw. It’s familiar, it’s comfortable and if you know the sub-genre, you’ll slip into this like a welcoming pair of slippers.

Throw in a unlockable talents, light RPG elements, an inventory system and such. What you get here is a very playable and very enjoyable little game for a great budget price of less than £10. If you’re a hardened vet, you’ll most probably get to the end credits in five or six hours. However, there are different difficulty settings, if you want to test your skills. Plus, if you want to go for 100% and get every item/weapon in the game, finish all the side-quests and such you can add two or three more hours to the game length.

The controls are responsive, the music is awesome and very atmospheric. Overall, a very nice little package and the work of a solo dev. Undivine is minimalistic, but it’s also heaps of old-school fun for a great budget price. If you enjoy the Metroidvania sub-genre, check this title out.
