Just to repeat, this is nothing but a fan theory. It’s a bit of pointless fun, but I think the MCU’s recent moves and hints might push the next saga (post Doctor Doom) into the supernatural.

The MCU has always moved in eras, each defined by a single overarching theme and a villain who embodies it. The first era gave us the purple one, Thanos/aliens and cosmic existentialism. After that, Marvel planned to build toward Kang, and even cast Jonathan Majors as the feared Conqueror in Loki and Ant‑Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (post-credits). But when Majors was accused and later found guilty of assault and harassment of an ex-girlfriend, Marvel dropped him and shelved the announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty film.

With Kang gone, Marvel delayed the film and pivoted the story to Doctor Doom, who is set to bring multiversal identity and fractured reality with Avengers: Doomsday. As we already know, the follow‑up, Secret Wars, will collapse the multiverse into one focused MCU timeline. Once that’s done, Marvel needs a fresh direction, something they haven’t explored at scale. I think the next frontier is Hell and the supernatural. And when you explore Marvel’s recent films, the hints in their storytelling, and the characters they’re positioning like chess pieces, a supernatural saga led by Mephisto starts to make some sense.

Marvel’s Saga Pattern Hints At The Supernatural

Marvel never repeats a major theme. Thanos, aliens, cosmic threat and all that. Done. They’re currently exploring the multiverse, and will end it with Secret Wars. So Marvel will shift eras/genres for the build to the next epic showdown.

  • Infinity Saga: cosmic philosophy, destiny, balance
  • Multiverse Saga: fractured identity, alternate selves, broken timelines
  • Post‑Secret Wars Saga: the supernatural, temptation, damnation

One as yet untouched corner of the MCU is the metaphysical. Souls, demons, corruption, bargains, Hell. It’s fresh, it’s darker, and it gives Marvel a new playground for the next decade or so.

Doctor Strange Already Tested the Horror Tone

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness wasn’t just a stylistic experiment. I think it was Marvel dipping a toe into supernatural horror to see how audiences responded. Plus, Doctor Strange is the perfect bridge between the mystical and the infernal, and his films have already flirted with demonic magic, forbidden spells, and corrupted souls. He’s the natural mystical anchor of a Hell‑themed saga.

Ghost Rider Is Coming

Marvel recently announced a Ghost Rider film starring Ryan Gosling, and that’s not a small move. Ghost Rider is the gateway to Hell. He’s the Spirit of Vengeance. His entire mythology revolves around demons, soul bargains, and Mephisto himself. Marvel doesn’t cast a big star like Gosling unless the character is central to the next era. Ghost Rider is the supernatural equivalent of Doctor Strange dabbling in the multiverse, he’s the groundwork.

Blade’s Collapse Doesn’t Mean No Blade Ever

Marvel had been trying to get a new Blade film off the ground for years and were clearly wanting to shift to a darker, vampires and Hellish monsters vibe. It didn’t work out and was officially cancelled. But I don’t think it was scrapped because Marvel abandoned the supernatural direction, I think it just didn’t fit with the MCU then. This is a bit like the planned Kang film becoming Avengers: Doomsday. I think Marvel are very much invested in delving into the supernatural moving forward, and they’ve pivoted the Blade idea into Ghost Rider.

Marvel doesn’t bin a film unless it clashes with their long‑term vision (or a star has been found guilty of assault and harassment). Now that Ghost Rider is on the way, the supernatural theme is starting to become clearer. But Ghost Rider coming in doesn’t mean no more Blade, it just means that original idea for Blade is gone, or has changed. The daywalking vampire slayer could now be rebuilt to fit a supernatural/Mephisto-led storyline properly. I think Blade is still coming, but not for a few years and once the next era has been established.

Blade is the street‑level supernatural anchor. He deals with the everyday consequences of Hell bleeding into Earth. He fits the theme perfectly.

Spider‑Man Is Being Positioned As The Emotional Centre

Let’s be honest, Spider-Man is Marvel’s golden goose, he’s their main character, and will be a massive part of Secret Wars and beyond. Though the film rights are owned by Sony, the character is still very much Marvel, and they treat him as their flagship hero. I think Spidey will become the Iron Man/Captain America heart of the next era.

Brand New Day ended with Peter Parker admitting he doesn’t want to keep doing this alone. He worked with Frank Castle in BND, he wants to be part of a team again. Could Spidey eventually team up with Ghost Rider and (maybe) Blade? BND features a more mature, grounded Peter, and Marvel clearly wants him to grow into the emotional anchor of the next saga.

Spider‑Man is the perfect protagonist for a story about temptation, sacrifice, and moral compromise. His entire mythology is built on guilt and responsibility. Mephisto is the villain who exploits exactly those weaknesses. Plus, Spidey and Mephisto have quite the history in the comics. If Marvel wants a saga built around Peter’s emotional journey, Mephisto is the perfect antagonist.

We’ve had the Home trilogy, and Brand New Day is the start of the Day trilogy. In the comics, Spidey cuts a damning deal with Mephisto and the title of that comic? One More Day. If you know the story of One More Day, then you’ll know the exact same deal can’t be made, the MCU can’t do a 1:1 adaption. But the MCU has often adapted comic stories before and mixed them up them a bit, done their own thing. I can see Marvel adapting One More Day as a future Spidey film, with some big changes, but still with Spidey making a deal with Mephisto… and things end up going very wrong.

Mephisto Connects Every Corner Of The MCU

A good saga villain needs reach. Mephisto ties into:

  • Spider‑Man
  • Ghost Rider
  • Doctor Strange
  • Blade
  • Wanda (she’s coming back)
  • The Fantastic Four
  • Thor (if he survives Doomsday/Secret Wars)

He’s the only villain who can really touch every part of the new MCU after Secret Wars, keep the history alive while pushing for a new future… without repeating Thanos or Kang Dr Doom.

Even more so, Mephisto has already been introduced into the MCU. He was in the Ironheart TV show, played by Sacha Baron Cohen. I think it would be a massive misfire to bring Mephisto into the MCU… and have him be a minor role given the reach and story potential that the character has.

The Russo Brothers Would Return for This Saga

I think, following Secret Wars, The Russos would love to come back for more Marvel, and do something different with a darker, supernatural storyline. A Mephisto saga gives them everything they’d need for a massive two-parter finale.

  • moral dilemmas
  • grounded emotional stakes
  • mythic imagery
  • ensemble storytelling
  • a huge, spiritual war
  • a finale built on character, not just spectacle

The Shape of the Saga

Here’s how the next era could unfold.

The Infernal Phase

Ghost Rider introduces Hell. Strange senses a tear in the spiritual fabric. Street‑level heroes notice rising supernatural crime. Peter struggles with burnout and isolation.

The Temptation Phase

Mephisto appears subtly. Heroes begin making small bargains. Blade returns as supernatural crime spikes. Spidey cuts a deal with Mephisto. Strange warns that Mephisto is manipulating reality itself.

The Damnation Phase

Hell bleeds into Earth. Mephisto attempts to claim the unified universe. Spider‑Man becomes the moral centre of resistance. Ghost Rider leads the supernatural front. Strange anchors the mystical defence. The final battle is spiritual, not cosmic.

Conclusion

Marvel will need a new direction after Secret Wars. They won’t repeat cosmic or multiversal threats (they’re outright ending the multiverse). The supernatural is a largely untouched frontier, and Mephisto is the villain who fits the theme, the characters, and the long‑term storytelling potential. Ghost Rider could be the setup. Blade could be introduced properly. Doctor Strange as the mystical strategist. And Spider‑Man is there as the emotional core throughout. With Mephisto as the next saga villain.
